OK, so I don't want to get too preachy here but if you care about what you eat, about where it comes from, about what it does to the earth, and what it does to your body, watch these videos:

http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/mark_bittman_on_what_s_wrong_with_what_we_eat.html

http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/michael_pollan_gives_a_plant_s_eye_view.html

Seriously. They aren't necessarily alarmist or patronizing, but they aren't important and it's information worth spreading around. Dig it.

Writer's Block: Forbidden Reading

From Judy Blume to V.C. Andrews, there's always a book circulating among teens that their parents don't want them to read. What favorite book did you have to hide from your parents?

View 503 Answers

Stolen from the divine Sarah of Libraryland.
My parents (sometimes mistakingly) trusted my judgment and as far as reading went, there was never an instance of "banned" books. My parents wanted me to read anything I could get my hands on, and I did. I read all the damn time including the time in the mornings that should've been spent getting ready for school. I'd eat breakfast, brush my teeth, tie my shoes, all with a book in my hand. It was the only time my mom ever yelled at me to put a book down.
As far as "forbidden reading" went, the only rule was a consistent high-brow to low-brow ratio. What horrible phrases, considering the popularity and importance of para-literature (but that's a whole other dissertation). It basically went something like this:
"Ok sweetheart, you just read thirteen Sweet Valley High books in 4 days. Now you have to read at least 2 of these books." At which point I'd be presented with an assortment of novels like Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry or Island of the Blue Dolphins or My Brother Sam is Dead. I started pulling books off of my parents shelves in middle school and I think they may have gotten a bit twitchy considering this was before Carl Hiaasen had written Hoot or Flush. But the important thing is that they never said no.
Thanks mom and dad!

Hello friends!

Eddie and I are alive and well in Portland, just sans internet at the moment. Thank god for free internet usage at Chance of Rain Cafe (with purchase of tea). Our apartment is slowly but surely getting put together and nested in, my aunt and uncle have been tremendous so far, and Tuanda is getting used to hardwood floors. We should be getting our internet stuff figured out by Thursday, but I just wanted to let y'all know that I miss you, and that I did indeed survive the 12 hour drive.

I think my new vice is sour patch watermelons. Holy cow, I've forgotten the utter divinity of sour watermelon candy.

What I really wanted to use this post for was to embed a youtube clip of the preview for Young @ Heart but youtube has decided that I cannot have the embedding ability. There's a chance that I've linked to it before, but this just emphasizes my super jazzed excitement for this documentary. Senior citizens + rock 'n roll= the most bad ass experience any one of us will ever have. Anyway, go look it up.

I'm having a Hedwig moment. One of my neighbors has decided that everyone in the vicinity needs to heard Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" on repeat. No wonder the little boy is screaming.

Ok people. This is serious business.

I'm making an ultimate 90s mix, and I'm calling for your help. What were you listening to? What, to you, were staples of 90s music? I'm looking for bands and songs other than the standards (Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Hole, etc).
Oh yes, it will be shiny.

can we make out now?

So, for all of you out there who can appreciate sardonic, Iggy Pop-loving pregnant teens whose life soundtrack is done by Kimya Dawson/ Moldy Peaches, then you must go see Juno.

Also, because Ellen Page is teh awesome, rent Hard Candy too.

Jaysus. Today is going to be so very slow. I'm here alone at the store until 5pm and since everyone in this cesspool of money is now jet setting to Paris or Vienna, I think it's just going to be me and the libros. Not a terrible thing, but it can be nice to be at least semi-busy so I can stop clock watching.

At least I have a series of tubes to keep me company on which such glorious things as Zeus' Hammer's video for "Metal Meat" can be found. Do yourself a serious favor and watch this. It will spice up your Sunday.

<lj-embed id="5" />

Oooh. abc.com has two full episodes of My So-Called Life. Why does crap like the OC insist upon sticking around but brilliance like MSCL and Firefly get removed after one season? And why aren't full seasons of Daria out on DVD yet? Oh the pain of life.

Here's a little factoid for you: "Although generalist scavengers, these isopods are mostly carnivorous and feed on dead whales, fish, and squid; they may also be active predators of slow-moving prey such as sea cucumbers, sponges, radiolarians, nematodes and other zoobenthos, and perhaps even live fish. They are known to attack trawl catches. As food is scarce in the deep ocean biome, giant isopods must make do with what fortune brings; they are adapted to long periods of famine and have been known to survive over eight weeks without food in the aquarium."

Bitchin'. It seems like the giant isopod is the "it" creature.

EDIT: Apparently when I said I thought that it would just be me and the books today, I meant me and the books and a FUCKLOAD of people. Including a little girl who peed on the floor.

we'll be crazy like a river bend

The holiday shopping season is upon us.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071206/ap_on_re_us/mall_shooting

*sighs* Would things like this happen if we paid more attention to our children? If we were kind to the "freak" kids, if we cared more about rehabilitating people instead of imprisoning them or forcing them into a marginalized demographic? Would it happen if we took siestas like the Spaniards?
