"You are like the Doomed american rebels - just a big shameful MESS!!" [17 Feb 2009|06:57pm]
For those of you who want to be simultaneously amused and horrified, go here http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/religion/4678943/Westboro-Baptist-Church-justifies-UK-picket.html

The Westboro Baptist Church, infamous hateful asshats, are headed overseas to preach the word of God to the "UK rebels" at a Laramie Project performance.
It's terrifying and hilarious.

godless sissy liberals [27 Jan 2009|03:00pm]
OK, so I don't want to get too preachy here but if you care about what you eat, about where it comes from, about what it does to the earth, and what it does to your body, watch these videos:

Seriously. They aren't necessarily alarmist or patronizing, but they aren't important and it's information worth spreading around. Dig it.

I'm sure a lot of you folks already know, but just in case, tomorrow is a national protest against Prop 8. There are rallies and protests in thousands of cities so check out the link, find the city closest to you, and get yourself there (if you're able).

Y''all know why we should try to be there.

Writer's Block: Forbidden Reading [19 Oct 2008|08:35pm]

From Judy Blume to V.C. Andrews, there's always a book circulating among teens that their parents don't want them to read. What favorite book did you have to hide from your parents?

Stolen from the divine Sarah of Libraryland.
My parents (sometimes mistakingly) trusted my judgment and as far as reading went, there was never an instance of "banned" books. My parents wanted me to read anything I could get my hands on, and I did. I read all the damn time including the time in the mornings that should've been spent getting ready for school. I'd eat breakfast, brush my teeth, tie my shoes, all with a book in my hand. It was the only time my mom ever yelled at me to put a book down.
As far as "forbidden reading" went, the only rule was a consistent high-brow to low-brow ratio. What horrible phrases, considering the popularity and importance of para-literature (but that's a whole other dissertation). It basically went something like this:
"Ok sweetheart, you just read thirteen Sweet Valley High books in 4 days. Now you have to read at least 2 of these books." At which point I'd be presented with an assortment of novels like Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry or Island of the Blue Dolphins or My Brother Sam is Dead. I started pulling books off of my parents shelves in middle school and I think they may have gotten a bit twitchy considering this was before Carl Hiaasen had written Hoot or Flush. But the important thing is that they never said no.
Thanks mom and dad!

I want a t-shirt that says that.

And that man, he is too fine.

Hello friends!

Eddie and I are alive and well in Portland, just sans internet at the moment. Thank god for free internet usage at Chance of Rain Cafe (with purchase of tea). Our apartment is slowly but surely getting put together and nested in, my aunt and uncle have been tremendous so far, and Tuanda is getting used to hardwood floors. We should be getting our internet stuff figured out by Thursday, but I just wanted to let y'all know that I miss you, and that I did indeed survive the 12 hour drive.

While I was quite happy for the No Country folks (unsurprising) and for the mistress of snark, Diablo Cody (from stripper to oscar kid), for their wins, I was the happiest for these two lovelies.
Que viva la musica independente!

"Separated at Birth" (found on Perez Hilton). I'm normally not too interested in the whole Perez Hilton superstardom, but you can't tell me this isn't freakin' hilarious.
